Orígenes y formación Hijo de Andrés Prieto Alonso y de Constancia Tuero, su segunda esposa. La familia vivió sin problemas económicos hasta que la muerte del padre, en 1888, les dejó en la ruina. Comenzó entonces una etapa de privaciones y penurias. Constancia trabajó como sirvienta y, más tarde, después de mudarse a Bilbao (1891), mantuvo a sus hijos vendiendo quincallería en un puesto callejero.
